Mama’s Sauce



1 lb. sweet Italian sausage

1 lb.  ground beef

2-28 oz. cans crushed tomatoes

3-6 oz. cans tomato paste

1-28 oz. can diced tomatoes

3 onions chopped

3 carrots chopped or grated

6 cloves garlic chopped

2 teaspoons dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt (may need more)

1 teaspoon black pepper

Red pepper flakes (optional) to taste


Brown sausage and ground beef in a skillet or Dutch oven.  Drain fat.  In a Dutch oven or slow cooker, combine all the ingredients.  In a slow cooker, cook on low for 8-10 hours.  In a Dutch oven, cook at 325° for 4 hours.

** If using a slow cooker, sauce can be prepped the night before and stored in the refrigerator.  In the morning, remove and place in the slow cooker.  With this method it will take the full 10 hours as the sauce will be cold.
